Built to build better bosses

Built to build better bosses logo

For the better part of the last decade, if you’ve been managing people and doing it with empathy and self awareness, you’ve likely been receiving a biweekly newsletter from Melissa and Johnathan Nightingale (appropriately named The World’s Best Newsletter). Always heartfelt, often provocative–definitely funny–the Nightingales have a unique capacity for delivering deeply meaningful insights about what it means to lead humans (in all their messy complexity) while being human (see above re: messy and complex)–and they do it without a whiff of bullshit.

Together, the Nightingales head up Raw Signal Group (throw a bit of a Quebecois accent at it and you’ll get the joke) which delivers the best management and leadership training available online and in person for some of the most well known names in tech, creativity, and social good. Working with all levels of management, they deliver career-changing training that’s backed by decades of experience as people leaders themselves.

When RSG’s Director of Marketing, Farnia Fekri reached out to us about a complete rebuild of their digital platform, it was clear that they had put a lot of thought into how best to engage with their community, but were stymied by the technical and functional limitations of their current platform. It was also clear that, as long time readers of Melissa and Johnathan’s newsletter, we were going to have a great time working together (if we could get over being a little starstruck.)

As part of every new engagement we ask clients to fill out a Knowledge and Process survey. This survey prompts clients to think about what they know (and what they don’t know) about their community and their ecosystem, and it helps us get a better understanding of how they like to work (with answers ranging from “please deliver annotated hard copies for review and markup” to “throw me into the deepest depths of your FigJam files”). RSG’s survey told us we had a rare opportunity to crack our process wide open and go deep with them.

Over the course of a comprehensive discovery and exploration process, we looked at RSG’s business and the world in which it operates from every angle, building deep empathy with their community (a savvy, and bullshit-averse group); mapping out rich and engaging user journeys; identifying opportunities to surprise and delight; and building out a toolbox of components that would empower the RSG team to deliver the right message to the right person at the right time. We also worked closely with RSG’s design team to extend the already well-defined RSG brand into new touchpoints and digital applications.

The result is a platform that acts as a dialogue between the Nightingales and their community, representing their unique perspective and tone of voice, and creating clear pathways for engagement. The new platform acts as a hub, connecting relationships playing out via email, Slack, and in-person with programming that elevates team outcomes and takes careers to the next level.

Since launch, RSG has introduced new programs and initiatives through the platform and seen a clear rise in engagement across channels. We’ve remained close partners, rolling out new features and functionality as their business grows, ensuring the platform continues to serve their mission of building better leaders.

The process has been a DREAM. Imagine working with an agency that feels like a true extension of your team. Where we’re all running toward a shared outcome AND ALSO genuinely enjoying the process to get there, the whole way along.

– Melissa Nightingale, Co-founder, Raw Signal Group

When we decided to redesign our website, we looked for an agency that valued both creative talent and strong project management. Significant Other was (and is!) the obvious choice. They approached the project with a ton of excitement and curiosity, challenged us where we needed to be challenged, worked with our existing brand architecture, and collaborated seamlessly with our designer. On top of just being lovely to work with, they felt like a natural extension of our team.

If this work resonates, imagine what we could create together. Let’s talk about it.
